Job Description

This position is the lead figure in the Brewers Association's (BA's) federal affairs presence on Capitol Hill. This position drives the association's political voice and influence forward via relationship building on all federal legislative, and many federal executive branch and regulatory matters.

Essential Duties

  • Advocate for the Brewers Association members' interests.
  • Manage the BA's legislative, grassroots and political advocacy efforts in Washington DC.
  • Work with senior staff and Government Affairs Committee to strategize, implement, and execute the BA's federal legislative and political priorities.
  • Identify, track, and promptly report on key federal legislation and executive branch activities that could impact the industry.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with members of Congress and their staff, members of the executive branch, and some regulatory agencies.
  • Provide written testimony for the association's senior staff and brewery members to represent the industry at congressional hearings.
  • Host events to educate legislators and their staff about the industry and assist in recruitment of new members for the Senate Bipartisan Small Brewers Caucus and the House Small Brewers Caucus.
  • Represent and advocate for the BA on industry coalitions and with key stakeholder organizations.
  • Write articles and provide updated content on BA's legislative efforts.
  • Ensure that BA's federal advocacy complies with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Coordinate advocacy efforts by organizing association members and state brewers' guilds to participate in grassroots campaigns.
  • Organize and run the association's legislative fly-in.
  • Assist the vice president and State Government Affairs Director in maintenance of relationships with state brewers' guilds.
  • Manage fundraising and budget for the Brewers Association Political Action Committee (PAC) and ensure that PAC is compliant with the Federal Election Commission reporting requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Craft Brewers Conference/Brew Expo and other travel as assigned (less than 5%).

Annual Salary Range

  • $109,000 - $139,000

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of five years of experience.
  • As this job requires work with federal legislators, the ideal candidate will be based in Washington, D.C. or the surrounding areas.
  • An ideal candidate will have knowledge of small business issues, tax policy, and a heavily regulated business environment. Existing relationships with Ways and Means and Senate Finance Committee members is a plus.
  • Excellent knowledge of congressional and legislative processes and a commitment to learn and become fluent in the issues facing small and independent brewers.
  • A commitment to promote and protect American craft brewers and their products.
  • Experience working for a congressional office or an Association setting preferred.
  • Positive, outgoing personality.
  • Professional and consistent demeanor.
  • Ability to verbally communicate in a clear, engaging, and accurate manner.
  • Strong troubleshooting ability.
